The Karma of Karma: How the Concept of Karmic Law Caught on—and is Often Misused

Karma has become part of the American vocabulary. Over the past several decades, the term has cropped up increasingly in TV shows, news reports, ads, pop songs, and everyday speech. It has clearly filled a gap in the English language—and, significantly, in the Western worldview. At once elegantly simple and unfathomably complex, karma has profound implications as a theory of cosmic justice and as a framework for fostering right action. But the concept is also commonly misconstrued and its meaning distorted, which threatens to dilute its value. Join Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda, for this discussion based on his research for his new book, Karmic Relief. We’ll explore what karma is, what it is not, and why it’s important that we—yogis and yoga teachers especially—understand the concept in all its subtleties and nuances.
